The InSide Pocket Story
Nugent Vitallo came up with the idea for Inside Pockets because of a near tragedy. One day, as he bent over to pick up his baby daughter, a pen fell from his pocket; point first and nearly speared the girl. Luckily, the pen missed, but this event got the inventor thinking about a better way. After years of sketches, trials, prototypes, and meetings with people in the garment industry, we have ISP; an elegant, simple design.
What is ISP?
ISP is InSide Pocket. It’s a system that allows garment manufacturers the ability to put a pocket on the inside of a shirt or other article of clothing. It allows users access to this pocket from the outside, but keeps articles in the pocket, and gives the wearer a secure feeling in the following ways:
- Articles will not fall out because they are trapped inside the garment – Security
- Others can’t see that you have something in your pocket- ideal for money clips and passports and other valuable items
- The wearer has a tidy appearance because the pocket “bulge” is not visible
In the case of a shirt, the ISP system is sewn to the inside breast area of a 2 or 3 button sport shirt. The ISP system contains and embroidery layer, the size of a normal logo, that is key in keeping the tidy look on the front side of the garment, even when it’s heavily loaded. The embroidery is also used to fasten the free hanging pocket to the shirt. The pocket itself is made from the same color material that the base shirt is made from to maintain its invisibility.
The ISP system is patent pending. As of the writing of this article, there are 8 allowed claims with the US patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
To access the pocket, the user reaches into the inside of the shirt through the placket, as if he were retrieving items from a sports coat. After 1 or 2 tries it becomes second nature.
Why do people want it?
The ISP system is all about security. People want to feel secure. A shirt with ISP can make you feel secure on many levels; you can feel secure, by knowing that your valuables are safely hidden from view; you can feel secure knowing that if you happen to bend over, your pocket contents will not spill out; and lastly, you can feel secure knowing that you look your very best, because you have a tidy look that only the ISP system can provide.
Sport Shirt Market
At retail, the sport shirt market is about 17 million units per year in the US. It’s a competitive, price sensitive market that’s highly segmented. Products in the sport shirt market are pretty much commodities in that they all look very much alike. That is, until the ISP system came along.
The ISP patent and function allows Inside Pockets, Inc to separate itself from the rest of the sport shirt market. You can tell a story about this product. It’s a concept that’s rapidly understood and its benefit is quickly realized. Even so, the planned pricing of the ISP shirts is competitive.
The marketing plans for the ISP system are as follows:
- A direct marketing program with advertising in magazines and phone/ internet ordering fulfillment
- Private branding program with large retailers
- A possible joint venture with national brand or retailer
- other
